Name:
Mavis Garcia
Pueblo/Tribe Affiliation:
Santo Domingo/Goshute
Skills:
Jewelry, Beadwork
Statement: I design contemporary and Native American traditional jewelry. I make chokers and necklaces out of turquoise heishi & multi-colored stones & shells. I carve bird fetishes, using turquoise & different kinds of shells, such as pipestones, mother of pearl, serpentine, abalone shells, red, orange and purple oyster shells, and black jet strung onto light or dark olive shell heishi. I also carve orange tip olive shell bird fetish necklaces. I also do beadwork using glass beads, traditionally designed and styled in the southwest designs. I also incorporate turqoise heishi and various shells with silver and design them in my beaded bracelets and chokers. Much of my work is custom designed.
